As more and more of the world is online, there are many things that pop up that seem helpful. For example, you might find cleaning hacks on Instagram or meal ideas on Facebook. However, as your parents may have told you years ago, not everything on the Internet is true! Unfortunately, one supposed hack you might have seen on TikTok or Facebook is not actually beneficial for you – in fact, it is actually the opposite! If you have seen the trend where people are putting an umbrella over their air conditioning unit in hopes of keeping some heat off it as the temperatures continue to soar into the 100s, Top Gun Heating & Air Conditioning in Lubbock would like to strongly caution you against doing this. There are other ways to cool off your AC unit and keep it functioning well as summer continues.

While it may seem like a good idea to keep your AC unit in the shade of an umbrella, this can be detrimental to your unit. Your air conditioner needs space above it to dissipate the heat coming off the top. Covering the outdoor AC unit causes the unit to recirculate the hot air coming off the fan motor and makes the compressor work much harder and use more electricity than necessary. It can actually cause your unit to go off on high pressure if it gets too hot. If you would like to help your unit out a little in this unprecedented heat, you can run a water hose on the unit in the afternoon to cool it off and also keep the condenser coils cleared of debris.

You may see some excellent tips and tricks on TikTok or other social media platforms, but these are not the best practices to help keep your air conditioning unit run efficiently. Top Gun Heating & Air would like to remind people that not everything you see on the Internet is true! Additionally, if any issues pop up with your unit this summer or fall, please contact us. We offer the best air conditioning services in Lubbock.
